Born to an Indian mother and Jamaican father, Kamala Harris is the first Asian-American and the first woman who will be Vice President of The United States. Her Spouse is an entertainment lawyer Douglas Emhoff, who has taken it to Twitter with his sweetest support messages for her.
Early Life of Kamala Harris.
Harris was born on October 20, 1964, in Oakland, California. Her mother, Shyamala Gopalan, had arrived in the U.S. from Tamil Nadu, India in 1958. A 19-year-old graduate student in nutrition and endocrinology at UC Berkeley. Her father, Donald J Harris, is a professor emeritus of economics, who arrived in the U.S. from Jamaica in 1961 for graduate study at UC Berkeley. Harris visited India many times and says that her maternal grandfather’s, who was a civil servant in India, views on democracy and women empowerment impressed her deeply.
Education.
In 1986, Harris graduated from Howard University with a degree in Political Science and Economics. After graduating, Harris attended law school at UC Hastings through its Legal Education Opportunity Program (LEOP). While at UC Hastings, she served as president of its chapter of the Black Law Students Association. She graduated with a Juris Doctor in 1989 and was admitted to the California Bar in June 1990.
Career.
In 2002, Harris became the first person of colour to be elected as District Attorney of San Francisco. She continued on the position in 2007 as well. During her time as the DA, Harris worked towards public safety by increasing the felony conviction rate. She also took steps towards the recidivism and re-entry initiative and truancy initiative.
On January 3, 2011, Kamala Harris became the first woman, the first African American. Also, the first South Asian American to hold the office of Attorney General in California’s history.
On November 4, 2014, Harris won the election against Republican Ronald Gold, winning 57.5% of the vote to 42.5%.
During her term as an Attorney General, Harris worked for consumer protection, criminal justice reform, LGBT rights public safety.
In 2015, Kamala Harris declared her candidacy for U.S Senate. During her campaign, Harris called for immigration and criminal-justice reforms. Increases to the minimum wage, and protection of women’s reproductive rights. Kamala Harris won the elections. She became famous for her prosecutorial style of questioning witnesses during her tenure.

In January 2019, Kamala Harris announced her candidacy for President of The United States. After her first Presidential debate in June 2019 against former Vice President Joe Biden, Harris gained support. But, her popularity saw a dive after the second presidential debate. Finally, Kamala withdrew the nomination from the presidential elections in December 2019.

In August 2020, Joe Biden declared Kamala Harris as his running mate for the presidential elections to be held in 2020.
After the presidential elections, Kamala Harris is the first woman and first African-South Asian American to win as Vice President of The United States.
