6 Important lessons from our first trip together to Phuket.

As much as the fun we had on our very first trip to Phuket, we equally enjoyed the days of looking forward to this little adventure of ours. Out of the long list of dictating advantages of travelling with a partner, there are a few. You can spend the lazy plane hours without the help of phone or laptop, you have someone to get your pictures clicked from selfies are no fun all the time, you can plan a lot better and also, the fun doubles with your partner.

1. Instead of planning our days after reaching the destination, we planned ahead, and that did a ton of work.

The true purpose of vacations is to break the monotony, To experience how an unexpected day looks like. But a little planning does not do any harm, isn’t it? Looking at the days we had, we filtered the top 5 things we wanted to do in Phuket. Then, we assigned each destination to the days we had. This saved us from hassle and confusion which we would have felt once we arrived there. Our top 5 were; Beach, shopping, city trip, wandering on the streets and Thai massage.

2. Weather will not always be in your favour, make it in your favour.

Now, this is something we went through. We were unfortunate to not have got the flexibility in our schedule. So, we had to plan travel in Thailand’s monsoon season only. Out of our 5-day trip, it rained for 2 days. Luckily, since we had not pre-booked the package, we had the flexibility to choose between the indoor and outdoor sights. Looking at the bright side, we managed to get cheap accommodations, less crowded bars to and streets and cheaper trips to the nearby islands.

3. Make some efforts to arrange the cheapest flights.

After scrolling through various travel apps, we settled on the flights through make my trip. That meant booking a few days ahead, compromising our schedule to beat the sky-rocketing flight price and not booking the meal in flight and carrying the home-made snacks along with. Also,  We didn’t mind a 5-hour rest in Mumbai if it meant cheaper price and more time with each other (that was the whole idea after all).

4. Keep the docs in mind.

I watched several YouTube videos to cover pretty much everything we needed to arrange for the trip. We carried the photocopies of our passports, our full itinerary, our ID’s. When it is Visa on arrival, you may be requested to provide these documents. For the trip booking, once we reached there, travel agents only asked for our hotel name. But for the bike bookings, we were careful to provide only xerox copies of our passports when they demanded it. Such little details mean a lot on trips out of the country.

5. Did someone say money? I am all ears!!

Lets dive-in into my favourite topic. I wanted to leave some details about it, here they are:-

  • Money exchange: –
    • Feel free to do your own research and ask around. My husband discovered that we could get more for less. It goes like this; Indian rupees to American dollars and Thai Bhat for them. When we calculated later, we had saved almost 6000 Bhat altogether. The trick really worked for us; it can work for you too.
  • Don’t exchange in one go: –
    • The exchange rate changes every day. Instead of exchanging the money once and for all, we exchanged small portions every day during our stay. We estimated our next day’s expenses and exchanged accordingly. Now, since there are many money exchanges all around the city (and most of the tourist places have these), we took our time exploring many of them and thus, wandering around to see the city.
  • Divide the money: –
    • This is a cool trick to save money. If a single person manages your cash, the person will remain aloof and end up spending more. On the contrary, when both have their own chunk, they are equally responsible to manage it.

6. Try new foods at a new place.

Imagine a vegetarian’s plight in a country that is known for its seafood!! To our amaze, Phuket was thick with restaurants for vegetarians. After settling in on our first day, we went out to find a restaurant somewhere. Surprisingly, we found 3 Indian restaurants on a single street. The next few days consisted of trying different restaurants to find the best one.

For what it is worth, The trip was impeccable itself. I hope the information will be handy for my readers as well.
